Successful Endeavours - Electronics Designs That Work!

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things, or IoT as it is abbreviated to, is still an emerging trend. But it is driving some substantial changes in some industry areas. This includes the 4th Industrial Revolution, also known as Industry 4.0.

If you are deploying to a factory or industrial complex, then generally the networking and power is already dealt with and you can piggy back off the existing infrastructure. But what about deploying Remote Telemetry? If you wanted to measure water tank levels or water usage in a rural location you might have to use a solar powered or primary battery powered system and 3G or 4G communications to get the data back to a website or server. That can have its own challenges. The typical industrial computer used for these monitoring tasks and posting reports or transactions requires a lot of power to run and is expensive. So can you do it if the budget for the hardware is $600, you don’t want to use solar cells and also don’t want to change the batteries every month?

The answer is YES. Check out this short video to find out how.

The awards referred to are covered in our recent posts on the National Manufacturing Week Endeavour Awards and the Process Automation and Control Electronics PACE Zenith Awards. The applicable categories are:

  • Water and Wastewater – IoT Monitoring Platform
  • Best Fieldbus Implementation – IoT Monitoring Platform
  • Power and Energy Management – IoT Monitoring Platform
  • Australian Industrial Product of the Year – IoT Monitoring Platform
  • IT Application of the Year – Telemetry Host IoT web platform

Endeavour Awards 2015

This year we were finalists at the Endeavour Awards in the categories of Australian Industrial Product of the Year and IT Application of the Year. We didn’t win either category but the competition was pretty tough and I was pleased for ANCA for beat us for the Australian Industrial Product of the Year and also won the overall award for Manufacturer of the Year. The full list of winners are announced at the Endeavour Awards Winners 2015 official winners list.

It was a great night and a chance to share the evening with most of our team and a room full of people who are looking to be part of the solution rather than just contributing to the problem of being competitive in Australian Manufacturing.

National Manufacturing Week 2015

In a couple of weeks Australia celebrates National Manufacturing Week 2015. Successful Endeavours will be exhibiting there along with the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) as part of Austech

National Manufacturing Week

National Manufacturing Week

This year the convention runs in Melbourne at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from Tuesday 26 May 2015 to Friday 29 May 2015. If you want to attend, you can register for National Manufacturing Week 2015 or Austech 2015 for  a free visitor’s badge. And if you do attend, please drop in and visit us at Austech stand MS01.

Endeavour Awards 2015

The same week the winners are being announced for the Endeavour Awards 2015, we are finalists with 3 of our development projects and will find out on 28th May 2015 who the winners are. This is another great celebration of Australian manufacturing success stories. We have booked a full table. Having been to the awards ceremony before, it is such a positive experience to be in a room full of people who are trying to be part of the solution rather then part of the problem. And let’s face it, some of the issues we face today will need quite a few positive focused and capable people to solve.

As part of National Manufacturing Week, Manufacturing Monthly run the Endeavour Awards to celebrate Australian manufacturing success stories. Last year we were a finalist for the Technology Application of the Year. This year we are very excited to announce that we are finalists in 2 categories and in one of those, we have 2 separate products that are both finalists. That sounds a bit complicated. What it means is that we are listed 3 times as a finalist. The categories are:

  • Australian Industrial Product of the Year – ABB CQ930 3 phase power factor correction controller
  • Australian Industrial Product of the Year – IoT Monitoring Platform
  • IT Application of the Year – Telemetry Host IoT web platform

IoT of course stands the the Internet of Things.

The official Manufacturing Monthly announcement is at Endeavour Awards 2015 Finalists.

The Endeavour Awards ceremony is being held at the The Crown Casino Melbourne in the River Room on 28 May 2015. We hope to have even more good news on the night.

And we also have a couple of logos we can use to promote our finalist position, and of course, the Endeavour Awards themselves.

Manufacturers’ Monthly Endeavour Awards 2014

Last night we attended the Manufacturers’ Monthly Endeavour Awards gala dinner at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney as finalists in the Technology application of the Year category.

We didn’t win this year but we also didn’t know what each of our competitors had submitted until the dinner. I was very impressed.

The winner for Technology Application of the Year was Micreo for their patented microwave communications tuning technology which reduces the time and cost to tune a new microwave communications device allowing to compete internationally with a high Australian Dollar. Very well deserved.

The overall winner was Marand Precision Engineering who have transitioned their business away from dependency on the automotive industry and recently secured production orders for the F35 Joint Strike Fighter vertical fins.

And personal favourite as a musician was RODE Microphones win as Exporter of the Year.

It was a great night celebrating success within Australian manufacturing.

Here is what we went up against:

Manufacturers’ Monthly Endeavour Awards 2014

I recently spotlighted the Endeavour Awards which are held on the first evening of National Manufacturing Week. This is where we celebrate manufacturing success stories each year. What I didn’t mention at the time was that we had entered this year for the first time.

The awards are run by Manufacturers’ Monthly who also select the categories, finalists and ultimately the winners. They were first held in 2007. We have already been asked a few times if they were named after us. And the answer is that this is a pure coincidence. So a nice synchronicity but no relation.

Technology Application of the Year

We have just received the news that we are finalists in the category of Technology Application of the Year. The technology we put forward was our Production Test Technology that allows us to put in place product test end of line equipment at as little as 5% of the cost of other approaches that are more commonly used. This is one way we help Australian Electronics Manufacturers to be able to have a cost competitive product that is still Made in Australia.

We were already going to National Manufacturing Week to support Casey Cardinia Region who are exhibiting this year. We are exhibiting with them.

The full list of finalists is available at Endeavour Awards 2014 Finalists. There were a record 138 entries this year.

We won’t know the final outcome until 13th May 2014 when the Endeavour Awards Presentation Dinner is held at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney. Either way we already feel like winners.

Wish us luck.

National Manufacturing Week

Each year during National Manufacturing Week we have the opportunity to celebrate and explore Australian Manufacturing. It alternates between Sydney and Melbourne and in 2014 it is being held in Sydney from May 13-16 at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park.

National Manufacturing Week

National Manufacturing Week

From the messages in the press recently, you would think that manufacturing in Australia is dead. But the truth is a long way from that. Recent announcements from the Automotive Manufacturing sector are disappointing but that is not the only manufacturing we do here. Manufacturing is the equal third largest sector of the Australian economy and the largest sector in Victoria. The sector it is equal in size to is mining. That’s right, the same size as mining!

So it is worth looking after a little better than we have been.

It kicks off on the 13th May 2014 with the exhibition followed by a networking function and the Endeavour Awards gala dinner. This year we entered the awards so are hoping to have some news about that soon.

The National Manufacturing Week networking event this year is being sponsored by the Casey Cardinia Region which is where Successful Endeavours is located. This is a very progressive venture between the City of Casey and the Shire of Cardinia. and a great example of the collaboration we need to become a lot better at in Australia. We are also a member of the Casey Cardinia Business Group which is one of their strategic initiatives.

We will be going to National Manufacturing Week this year and hope you will consider it too. If you haven’t been before, you might be pleasantly surprised at both the breadth and depth of Australian Manufacturing.
