Casey Business Awards

We finally have photos from the Casey Business Awards for 2013 so here they are.

Business And Professional Services Award 2013

Business And Professional Services Award 2013

The picture above is for the Business and Professional Services Award for 2013 and was presented by the Department of State Development, Business and Innovation DSDBI. If you have been keeping track, we have won this award 3 out of the past 4 years.

Innovation Award 2013

Innovation Award 2013

And this one is for the Casey Innovation Award for 2013 presented by Westfield Fountain Gate. As a Product Development company specialising in the creation of new technology based products, I had expected to be recognised for out Innovation in how we implement new Electronics Based products. However this time we were recognised for our marketing strategies and in particular our use of the Internet to both communicate with customers and for lead generation.

As you might know from my recent post on our wins at the Casey Business Awards 2013, this is the last year that these awards will be held. Next year the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire will hold joint awards, probably under the name of the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. I am hoping this proves to be an even better as an awards program.

Casey Business Awards 2013

We found out in August that we were Casey Business Awards 2013 Finalists in 2 categories:

  • Business and Professional Services Award
  • Manufacturer of the Year

Tracey Curro

Tracey Curro

Tonight at the Casey Business Awards Gala Dinner our MC, Tracey Curro did an excellent job of running the night. And we were thoroughly entertained by Max Walker who told some of his story and left me with a very profound insight into success.

Max Walker

Max Walker

The part of his presentation that resonated with me was the story about winning his first baggy green cap as he made the Australian Cricket Team. He went home, put the cap on and showed his Dad. His Dad asked for the cap and then put it on. And in that moment Max knew that his dad had believed in him and hoped for him long before he had been able to do it for himself.

Wow. This night might be about success for some businesses in winning their specific categories, but it was equally a win for everyone who believed in each of those business owners or operators long before they had won anything themselves.

Casey Business Awards 2013 Winners

Back to the awards process.

We won the Business and Professional Services Award 2013. We were pretty stoked about that.

The Manufacturer of the Year went to WasTech Engineering. Since we are primarily a service to Australian Electronics Manufacturers by designing new products for them, I have been very pleased to even be a finalist in this category. We do manufacture products but never in competition with other local manufacturers.

It was also a great night for Wastech Engineering who ultimately took out Casey Business of the Year 2013. So well done. And this is the second year running that a local manufacturer has won the award and 3 of the 4 years were manufacturing related with us winning Casey Business of the Year 2010.

But it didn’t stop there as the judges handed out some additional awards. I’m pleased to announce that we also received the Casey Business Award 2013 for Innovation.

This is the final year of the Casey Business Awards. Next year they are combining with the Shire of Cardinia to hold the combined Casey Cardinia Business Awards. We will also be involved in that. The 2 councils working together should prove to be a tremendous success. I’m certainly looking forward to it.

And at the end of the night we got a shot with Max Walker. He really is a legend.

The official announcement was made by the City of Casey on 21 August as Monash University Berwick Campus and also on the City of Casey website in their press release Casey Business Awards Finalists 2013. It was also covered by the Star News Group in their article Shortlist for Top Spot.

Casey Business Awards Finalist 2013

There will be a Gala Dinner to announce the winners on 17 October 2013 at Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park.

This past 4 years we have felt very supported by the Casey Economic Development Department who are doing an outstanding job of promoting and supporting local businesses. And it helps that we have been recipients for several awards including Casey Business of the Year in 2010 and current hold the Casey Business and Professional Services Award for 2012.

City Of Casey

City Of Casey

This is the final year for the City of Casey holding these awards. As of 2014 the Shire of Cardinia and the City of Casey will hold joint business awards. So one way or another, this is the end of an era.

It is also the beginning of another very exciting era with the councils working together to build the economy across their whole region. I’m convinced that a prosperous future requires this level of collaboration and not just individual councils working on their own and I congratulate both councils for choosing to work together to achieve just that, greater prosperity together than they can achieve individually.

It was another excellent evening hosted by the City of Casey and the Casey Economic Development Department. The guest presenter was Neil Mitchell of 3AW who covered a range of topics including the need for clear and upfront communications from politicians and public figures; and his admiration of small businesses and their contribution to the success of the nation.

Neil Mitchell

He also left us with some advice. Here is the summary:

  • Know your limitations
  • Keep trying harder regardless of what you have already achieved
  • Don’t take yourself too seriously
  • Don’t forget who you work for; serve them; do your best for them.

And our congratulations got to GAIA Skin Naturals as winners of both the Manufacturer of the Year and Casey Business of the Year for 2012.

The official winners announcement is at 2012 Casey Business Awards Winners.

There will be official pictures and videos released soon and I’ll post again once they are available.

And the sponsors for the Business and Professional Services Award are actually 4 separate companies under one banner. Here are the domains for each:

Manufacturer of the Year: Finalist

In 2010 we were also finalists for Casey Manufacturer of the Year and we achieved that again in 2011 at the Casey Business Awards.

Electronics Manufacturer

Casey Manufacturer Of The Year Finalist 2011

Our congratulations go to Rex Vandenberg and the team at Injectronics for their win as Casey Manufacturer of the Year 2011. Very much deserved and a classic example of an Innovative Australian Electronics Manufacturer.

For those who know us well, we are not primarily an Electronics Manufacturer but provide the Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development for new or improved products for Australian Electronics Manufacturers. Another way of saying this is that we are R&D, Research and Development, for hire. And we sometimes also handle production logistics where that suits our clients since we have all the contacts and know all the processes. So I was very pleased to be recognised for how good our Electronics Manufacturing capability really is. Manufacturing is the largest economic sector in Casey and we were recognised as being in the top 3 manufacturers at the Casey Business Awards in 2011. This is also a good reason why the clients we serve end up with outstanding Electronics Designs that are well suited to Low Cost Electronics Manufacture; we understand Electronics Manufacturing.

Now if only they had a category for Electronics Design

MadCap Cafe

MadCap Cafe

Congratulations to MadCap Cafe for their win as Casey Business of the Year for 2011. As winners of Casey Business of the Year 2010 we know what a boost this can be to a business and I particularly liked their focus on making coffee to provide employment and opportunities to those suffering from mental illness.

Electronics Design

From the team at Successful Endeavours, recently recognised nationally for our Electronics Design capability with a win for Electronics News Future Award: Industrial Electronics, we would like to thank our suppliers, clients and supporters for being part of the journey of supporting Australian Electronics Manufacturers in 2011. And the year isn’t over yet!

Casey Business Awards 2011

Successful Endeavours are the current holders of Casey Business of the Year and we have been selected as Finalists in the Casey Business Awards 2011. We continue to find the City of Casey to be a very business friendly environment and these awards are just one example of many things they do to encourage and support local businesses.
The finalists were announced by City of Casey Mayor Shar Balmes.

The guest speaker was Futurist Paul Higgins, a consultant with Emergent Futures. He spoke about the changing role of the Internet and Social Media in how people make buying decisions and perceive value, and challenged us to think about how our businesses would address this challenge, both in defending against competitors and developing new business opportunities because of it. I was very impressed and have signed up for a trial of the scanning service offered by Emergent Futures where they bring together information on a particular area of interest and produce a consise and easily followed view of what this means. We are an ideas company and I can’t see how we won’t come up with at least 10 times the asking price of $49.94 a year in new ideas from this material.

Manufacturer Of The Year

We were also finalists in this category last year and some of you might be wondering how a business that focusses on Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development for Australian Electronics Manufacturers can also be a candidate for Manufacturer Of The Year?
The answer is straight forward. Having completed the design of a new electronics product, some of our clients get us to also manage the production logstics for them and either deliver programmed, tested and calibrated PCB sets to them; partially assembled product or fully assembled product. I though an example would help here.
We will call this one Client X. For Client X we do the following:
  • source all the components including electronics components, case, labels, batteries and machined and LASER cut items
  • get the PCBs loaded (we can handle small quantities in house but once you get over 30 PCB sets it becomes cheaper to use a dedicated SMT line)
  • program, test and calibrate the loaded PCBs
  • fit labels to the front chassis and then fit all the connectors, indicators and switches
  • fit the battery to the case
  • assembly the unit including the seals (this is an IP65 rated product)
  • apply serial numbers
  • final assembly and test then pack in shipping cartons with labels and matching serial numbers
  • ship to client who then sells them direct to their customers
In the case of Client X it wasn’t worth setting up an internal production line to handle a Niche Electronics product made in quantities of less than 500 per annum. Whereas we can handle this very cost effectively. We have a few strategies we use to radically reduce the cost of product test and calibration but I’ll save that for another post.
We will find out on 27 October 2011 at the Casey Business Awards Gala Dinner how we go in 2011. But for me, we are already winners.
Thanks again to both our suppliers and clients for providing us with great components and for giving us the amazing challenges and opportunites to create new electronics products. For one example of this, check out the 2011 Electronics News Future Award for Industrial Electronics we received for developing a Capacitor Bank Controller for ABB.

We recently had the pleasure of hearing Max Walker speak at a Casey Business Breakfast where he shared his story and some insights he had into careers and business. I have been invited to share about how the Casey Business Awards in 2010 had benefited Successful Endeavours and was interviewed by David Neitz and then had a front row seat to hear Max Walker share at length.

David Neitz interviews Ray Keefe

I was very impressed. Max Walker is a wonderful storyteller and when you hear him speak he paints a picture with words that is captivating and  inspiring. There were 2 specific take away points for me:

  • you have to spot and take the opportunities others miss, but only where your strengths are
  • you have to block out the Dream Stealers. Whenever you dream, the dream stealers will try and stop you.

Ray Keefe, Max Walker and Junette Keefe

For the first example, Max Walker talked about his books. He was writing short stories for a news paper. After he had a few, it was suggested to him to turn them into a book. He approached the paper and they happily gave him full permission and full copyright because they had already used them and saw no further value in them. He used them as the basis for his number 1 best seller How To Hypnotise Chooks . The key here was that he had been doing television presenting but no-one could write it like he spoke it. He had a unique story telling style. So he started writting his own scripts. That led to some short story writing, the news papers short stories and then full on books. The opportunity came from leveraging his story telling skill, which he now knew how to put in writing, and mixed with his celebrity status created the opportunity to write books, 7 of which have been best sellers. This was possible because Max Walker had the talent and had developed the supporting skill to be able to take the opportunity. But he wasn’t aware of just how outstanding he really was until after he had done it.

Hmm… I wonder what opportunities I am overlooking right now?

How about you?

Thinking About Opportunities

Thinking About Opportunities

The second example is something we all have to deal with. I have a dream! Famous first words for most of us, made iconic by Martin Luther King Jr. Dreams are a precious and a powerful creative force and it seems like whenever we have one, there is always a powerful negative force that comes against it. Max Walker shared some of the suprising sources of resistance he encountered. Friends, relatives especially, and colleagues are just a small subset of those who can become Dream Stealers. When we have a dream, we have to also be prepared to

Max Walker is both a gentleman and a thoroughly nice guy and I came away from the breakfast inspired, challenged and with a couple of unexpected bonusses.  My name was drawn for the major door prize which was a signed Melbourne FC guernsey and my business partner, Junette, came away with a Lollypotz gift box. Melbourne FC have been regular supporters of Business and community activities in the City of Casey so we are proudly displaying their jumper in our foyer.

Casey Business Awards

In 2010 the City Of Casey had their inaugural Casey Business Awards. They awarded us Casey Business of the Year and also gave us the award for Business and Professional Services which we shared with A Better Dental Care. As part of the awards ceremony they had 10 second videos prepared for each finalist and a 15 second video prepared for each category winner.  So we have 3 videos to show covering our awards as finalist for Casey Manufacturer Of The Year, as finalist and winners of the Casey Business and Professional Services Award and our award as Casey Business Of The Year for 2010.

Although we went to some length to describe what we do, which is Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development for Australian Electronics Manufacturers who still make their products in Australia, some of the voiceover comments didn’t quite come out right. It makes it all the more obvious how clear and consistent you have to be in explaining what you do.

So if you need an Electronics Product then we can do way more than is articulated in these videos but you do get a chance to see us in action.

This first video covers our finalist selection for Casey Manufacturer Of The Year 2010.

This second video includes both the finalist and winner videos for the Casey Business and Professional Services Award 2010.

This third video was prepared to cover our win as Casey Business Of The Year for 2010.

We have found the City Of Casey to be a very supportive environment for local businesses and are pleased to be working with them now as a member of the Casey Economic Development Partnership.

Last night was the Casey Business Awards gala dinner where the Casey Business Awards were given out for 2010.  We are very pleased to have been awarded the Casey Business of the Year for 2010.  It was a great night and Casey Mayor, Cr Lorraine Wreford presented the award to Ray and Junette Keefe of Successful Endeavours.

Successful Endeavours were also joint winners of the Business and Professional Services award for 2010.

And we were finalists in the Manufacturer of the Year category which was won by Jain and Janice Lal at Australian Solar Manufacturing. They make high grade 200W solar panels in Hallam, as good as you can get anywhere in the world, and really deserved their win.  Well done Jain and Janice.

We already let you know that we are finalists in 2 of the 9 categories for the City Of Casey inaugural Casey Business Awards in our post about being Casey Business Awards Finalists. The Casey Business Awards categories we are finalists in are:

  • Manufacturer Of The Year
  • Business and Professional Services

The news has been picked up by one of our local Newspapers, The Greater Dandenong Weekly, who ran the following article about us and the other finalists.  It is good to see so many strong contenders and our economy certainly needs strong businesses to continue to give both the employment and prosperity we have come to enjoy.
