Endeavour Awards 2015

This year we were finalists at the Endeavour Awards in the categories of Australian Industrial Product of the Year and IT Application of the Year. We didn’t win either category but the competition was pretty tough and I was pleased for ANCA for beat us for the Australian Industrial Product of the Year and also won the overall award for Manufacturer of the Year. The full list of winners are announced at the Endeavour Awards Winners 2015 official winners list.

It was a great night and a chance to share the evening with most of our team and a room full of people who are looking to be part of the solution rather than just contributing to the problem of being competitive in Australian Manufacturing.

PACE Zenith Awards 2015

We have only just heard. You probably already know that we are finalists for the Endeavour Awards 2015 this year with 3 of our projects. Today we got the news that we are finalists in 4 categories at the PACE Zenith Awards for 2015. I’m sure at least one of you is wondering whether I spend all my time just applying for awards. The answer is no. I didn’t even apply for these. PACE saw the entries we put into the Endeavour Awards and decided they would also be good candidates for the PACE Zenith awards and asked me if it would be OK if they entered them for us. You can guess the answer I’m sure.

As a result, we are finalist in 4 categories for the 3 projects they nominated us for. The 4 categories are:

  • Water and Wastewater
  • Best Fieldbus Implementation
  • Power and Energy Management
  • Transport Power and Infrastructure

Both out IoT Platform (Internet of Things Platform) and Telemetry Host web hosted back end qualify for all of these, and the ABB CQ930 power factor correction controller and multi-bank or multi-stage capacitor controller supports the Power and Energy Management and also the Transport Power and Infrastructure categories.

The awards winners are announced at the PACE Zenith Awards dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney on June 11th 2015.

Wish us luck.

Endeavour Awards

As part of National Manufacturing Week, Manufacturing Monthly run the Endeavour Awards to celebrate Australian manufacturing success stories. Last year we were a finalist for the Technology Application of the Year. This year we are very excited to announce that we are finalists in 2 categories and in one of those, we have 2 separate products that are both finalists. That sounds a bit complicated. What it means is that we are listed 3 times as a finalist. The categories are:

  • Australian Industrial Product of the Year – ABB CQ930 3 phase power factor correction controller
  • Australian Industrial Product of the Year – IoT Monitoring Platform
  • IT Application of the Year – Telemetry Host IoT web platform

IoT of course stands the the Internet of Things.

The official Manufacturing Monthly announcement is at Endeavour Awards 2015 Finalists.

The Endeavour Awards ceremony is being held at the The Crown Casino Melbourne in the River Room on 28 May 2015. We hope to have even more good news on the night.

And we also have a couple of logos we can use to promote our finalist position, and of course, the Endeavour Awards themselves.

Technology Challenge

We have had to keep quiet about this until the Victorian Government announcement today. Now we can let you know that Successful Endeavours was awarded the Feasibility Study stage for the Gas Sensors in Sewers project. We will be working with Melbourne Water to put together the study and it will be based on our data logging and sensor interface technology with a little help from a collaboration partner. More on that later.

Driving Business Innovation

The program is called the Driving Business Innovation program and is one of the ways the Victorian Government is creating local commercial opportunity for Victorian businesses by aligning local business capability with the needs of government agencies. The result is the technology needed to better serve the people of Victoria and a new commercial opportunity to grow jobs and revenue in Victoria.

DSDBI

Department of State Development and Business Innovation

At a time when we see a federal perspective more like killing off opportunities, it is good to see a government that gets the need for jobs and income in the future and is prepared to do something positive to support that.

Collaboration Creates Opportunity

Hybrid Electronics and Successful Endeavours both have Intellectual Property to contribute to the final solution should the project proceed to the Proof of Concept stage. In order to win the Feasibility Study, we collaborated to share technology, expertise and presented a combined case for the project.

The work is underway and we hope to have more good news in the future.

Our congratulations go to the other companies who were also awarded Feasibility Study grants.

Manufacturers’ Monthly Endeavour Awards 2014

Last night we attended the Manufacturers’ Monthly Endeavour Awards gala dinner at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney as finalists in the Technology application of the Year category.

We didn’t win this year but we also didn’t know what each of our competitors had submitted until the dinner. I was very impressed.

The winner for Technology Application of the Year was Micreo for their patented microwave communications tuning technology which reduces the time and cost to tune a new microwave communications device allowing to compete internationally with a high Australian Dollar. Very well deserved.

The overall winner was Marand Precision Engineering who have transitioned their business away from dependency on the automotive industry and recently secured production orders for the F35 Joint Strike Fighter vertical fins.

And personal favourite as a musician was RODE Microphones win as Exporter of the Year.

It was a great night celebrating success within Australian manufacturing.

Here is what we went up against:

Manufacturers’ Monthly Endeavour Awards 2014

I recently spotlighted the Endeavour Awards which are held on the first evening of National Manufacturing Week. This is where we celebrate manufacturing success stories each year. What I didn’t mention at the time was that we had entered this year for the first time.

The awards are run by Manufacturers’ Monthly who also select the categories, finalists and ultimately the winners. They were first held in 2007. We have already been asked a few times if they were named after us. And the answer is that this is a pure coincidence. So a nice synchronicity but no relation.

Technology Application of the Year

We have just received the news that we are finalists in the category of Technology Application of the Year. The technology we put forward was our Production Test Technology that allows us to put in place product test end of line equipment at as little as 5% of the cost of other approaches that are more commonly used. This is one way we help Australian Electronics Manufacturers to be able to have a cost competitive product that is still Made in Australia.

We were already going to National Manufacturing Week to support Casey Cardinia Region who are exhibiting this year. We are exhibiting with them.

The full list of finalists is available at Endeavour Awards 2014 Finalists. There were a record 138 entries this year.

We won’t know the final outcome until 13th May 2014 when the Endeavour Awards Presentation Dinner is held at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney. Either way we already feel like winners.

Wish us luck.

Casey Business Awards 2013

We found out in August that we were Casey Business Awards 2013 Finalists in 2 categories:

  • Business and Professional Services Award
  • Manufacturer of the Year

Tracey Curro

Tracey Curro

Tonight at the Casey Business Awards Gala Dinner our MC, Tracey Curro did an excellent job of running the night. And we were thoroughly entertained by Max Walker who told some of his story and left me with a very profound insight into success.

Max Walker

Max Walker

The part of his presentation that resonated with me was the story about winning his first baggy green cap as he made the Australian Cricket Team. He went home, put the cap on and showed his Dad. His Dad asked for the cap and then put it on. And in that moment Max knew that his dad had believed in him and hoped for him long before he had been able to do it for himself.

Wow. This night might be about success for some businesses in winning their specific categories, but it was equally a win for everyone who believed in each of those business owners or operators long before they had won anything themselves.

Casey Business Awards 2013 Winners

Back to the awards process.

We won the Business and Professional Services Award 2013. We were pretty stoked about that.

The Manufacturer of the Year went to WasTech Engineering. Since we are primarily a service to Australian Electronics Manufacturers by designing new products for them, I have been very pleased to even be a finalist in this category. We do manufacture products but never in competition with other local manufacturers.

It was also a great night for Wastech Engineering who ultimately took out Casey Business of the Year 2013. So well done. And this is the second year running that a local manufacturer has won the award and 3 of the 4 years were manufacturing related with us winning Casey Business of the Year 2010.

But it didn’t stop there as the judges handed out some additional awards. I’m pleased to announce that we also received the Casey Business Award 2013 for Innovation.

This is the final year of the Casey Business Awards. Next year they are combining with the Shire of Cardinia to hold the combined Casey Cardinia Business Awards. We will also be involved in that. The 2 councils working together should prove to be a tremendous success. I’m certainly looking forward to it.

And at the end of the night we got a shot with Max Walker. He really is a legend.

Casey Business Awards Finalist 2013

There will be a Gala Dinner to announce the winners on 17 October 2013 at Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park.

This past 4 years we have felt very supported by the Casey Economic Development Department who are doing an outstanding job of promoting and supporting local businesses. And it helps that we have been recipients for several awards including Casey Business of the Year in 2010 and current hold the Casey Business and Professional Services Award for 2012.

City Of Casey

City Of Casey

This is the final year for the City of Casey holding these awards. As of 2014 the Shire of Cardinia and the City of Casey will hold joint business awards. So one way or another, this is the end of an era.

It is also the beginning of another very exciting era with the councils working together to build the economy across their whole region. I’m convinced that a prosperous future requires this level of collaboration and not just individual councils working on their own and I congratulate both councils for choosing to work together to achieve just that, greater prosperity together than they can achieve individually.

Small Business of the Year

Tonight we were awarded the Small Business Award for 2013 at the Melbourne’s South East Business Awards.

Melbourne's South East Small Business Award 2013

MSE Small Business Award 2013

The prize was given jointly to us and Gaia Skin Naturals who were Casey Business of the Year 2012.

Small Business Awards 2013

Small Business Award 2013

It was a fabulous dinner at the Frankston Arts Centre and we were pleased to be there with a great bunch of friends and colleagues to celebrate the night.

Successful Endeavours Friends And Colleages

MSE Small Business Award 2013

Above we have Graeme & Sharon Lauridsen, Junette & Ray Keefe, Matt And Bec Ratten, Lei and JayJay Shi. And our thanks to Ross & Jenny Neilson who took the photo and also joined us to celebrate.

The Melbourne South East regions consists of the following councils:

  • Cardinia Shire Council
  • City of Casey
  • City of Greater Dandenong
  • City of Kingston
  • Frankston City Council
  • Knox City Council
  • Maroondah City Council
  • Monash City Council
  • Mornington Peninsula Shire
  • Whitehorse City Council

And looking back on it, I realise that we spent an evening in a room full of businesses that are looking forward; who are trying to be part of the solution , not the problem. Because those are the kind of businesses that engage with the business awards process, who keep trying to improve themselves. Thinking about it, 2 years ago we were finalists for Melbourne’s South East Small Business of the Year and 2 years later we are joint winners. So that is progress. But everyone else present is doing the same. I felt very encouraged, not just because we came home with a trophy, but because so many other businesses are working hard to make this a better world.

And now a few thank yous.

First of all to Junette Keefe who owns and runs Successful Endeavours with me. We could not have achieved any of this without her support and tireless attention to detail. Any typos I put into this post will probably be fixed before you even look at it because she will sort it out.

And also to the rest of the team at Successful Endeavours, who have joined with me to create world class electronics products for Australian Electronics Manufacturers.

And our thanks go to the City of Casey and the Economic Development Department who have put together the Casey Business Awards process and been such proactive supporters of local business.

And to Dr Marc Dussault, The Exponential Growth Strategist, our business mentor, who has taught us how to build a successful business. We are outstanding engineers but they don’t teach you anything about running and building a business when you study engineering. Marc has taught us what we could not have learned on our own and held us to the highest standards so that we can be as good at business as we are at engineering.

And finally, to Arthur Cherrie, who first planted the thought in my mind that I could be excellent at business, long before I believed it myself. We all owe a great deal to those who have encouraged us.

And thank you to you for taking the time to read this post. I hope you are encouraged.

And Electronics News just ran a story on Award win for Successful Endeavours.
