Successful Endeavours - Electronics Designs That Work!

Electronics Entrepreneur

From Engineer To Entrepreneur

This is another one of those pictures that gives you a different impression of which way the door swings depending on whether you use the top of the picture or the bottom of the picture as your reference.

The door swings both ways - can you tell

The door swings both ways

On the evening of 31st August I was asked to share with the IEEE Computer Society Victoria Chapter on the topic of making the transition from thinking like an Engineer to thinking like an Entrepreneur. It is not the first time that I have been recognised as knowing something about this topic. My Business Mentor,  Dr Marc Dussault  The Exponential Growth Strategist, presented me with an award specifically for having made this step From Engineer To Entrepreneur within his Business Mastery program.

Engineers Think Like

As an Engineer I have to think in terms of:

  • Technical Requirements
  • Implementation Technology
  • Architecture and Functional Decomposition
  • Risk Elimination or at least Mitigation
  • Test Methodology
  • Delivery to Budget and Schedule
  • Project Deliverables

Entrepreneurs Think Like

As an Entrepreneur I need to think in terms of:

  • Who has a need and how can I meet it?
  • Branding and Positioning
  • Pricing Policy
  • Prospecting and Sales Channels
  • Leverage and Scalability
  • Business performance and metrics
  • Human Resources
  • Profitability

These are perspectives which are nearly orthogonal. Just like the door that seems to swing one way when looked at from the top, and another when looked from the bottom.

The presentation went very well and we had a good hour or Question and Answer time afterward.

Exponential Entrepreneur

In 2010 I was pleasantly surprised to receive an Exponential Entrepreneur of the Year award from our Business Mentor Dr Marc Dussault, The Exponential Growth Strategist of Exponential Programs. Only 5 awards were given out in 2010.

Exponential Entrepreneur 2011 Ray Keefe

A year has gone by and I was surprised and very pleased to be awarded an Exponential Entrepreneur of the Year award for 2011. This time only 3 awards were given out and this was the only one in Victoria.

If you are wondering why I am looking more casual, it is because we were at a Business Blogging for Sales Lead Generation event run by Marc so I had no idea this was going to happen. And here I am 24 hours later blogging about it.

Successful Endeavours’ Team

This award was only possible because of the great team we have at Successful Endeavours. My thanks go to Junette Keefe and Arend Carter for their support and business excellence during 2011. So far 2011 has seen 2 new awards and 2 finalist positions for either myself or Successful Endeavours. And it isn’t over yet.

All this comes only 2 days before we find out if Successful Endeavours is also taking home an award in the 2011 Casey Business Awards. If you hadn’t caught up with it, we are finalists for Manufacturer of the Year in the City of Casey Business Awards for 2011.

Victorian Engineer thanks Sydney Business Mentor

Today’s post is a thank you to Dr Marc Dussault and his team at Exponential Programs in Sydney.  We have been been part of the Business Mastery Platinum Program and many of the results you see are because of that. Marc has not tried to make me a better Engineer.  I was already good enough at Engineering. It was Business that I needed to become good at. And that is exactly what Marc’s programs are designed to address.

We have had quite a bit of success recently as well as some publicity to go with that.  The latest example is from the Star News Group BUSiNESS south-east magazine.  They have run an article looking at the difference that the Business Mastery Platinum Program has made to our business and also getting Marc’s take on it from his side.

If you have ever wondered about business coaching or mentoring programs and what they have to offer, then this is a good chance to see how it looks from both sides. You can click on the picture to get a larger copy to read or use the BUSiNESS south-east online magazine.

If you are wondering about the circuit boards I am holding, the product on the left is the core electronics assembly from the Borgtech CPL2 Corrosion Protection Data Logger for which we received 2 National Innovation Awards in 2009.  The one on the right will hit the market in early 2011 so I won’t say any more about that until our client is selling it.

Casey Radio 3SER 97.7FM

Today I was at Casey Radio, a community radio station catering to the south eastern suburban area of Melbourne, being interviewed for the Casey Business Hour which runs live to air on Fridays from 2pm to 3pm on 3SER 97.7FM. It was the first time I had been to the station so it was an interesting experience. With me were David Wilkinson and Tom Zsolt from the City of Casey Economic Development Department and Michelle Anderson from VECCI with radio announcer, Jamie.

Here are some pictures from the show:

The podcast is an interview which covered the history of Successful Endeavours, our move from a home based business to commercial premises, what we have done to grow our Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development business, how winning Casey Business of the Year has changed us and opportunities for Australian Electronics Manufacturers in the current economic climate.

Michelle Anderson from VECCI (Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry) was also interviewed and explained VECCI’s history as well as the benefits and services they offer to members and some of the programs they have initiated. Their tag line is “Invigorating Business” and I like what I heard. If you are a business in Victoria then you should check them out.

This week I was the recipient of an Exponential Entrepreneur of the Year award.  Last year we were received 2 awards for technical excellence when we won 2 of the 15 EDN Innovation awards handed out in Australia in 2009.

So I was very pleased to be receiving an award recognising the business side of Successful Endeavours.  The award was presented by Dr Marc Dussault of Exponential Programs and recognises entrepreneurs and business people who have demonstrated excellence deploying exponential strategies in their business by profitably creating exceptional value for their clients in a manner that is both measurable and sustainable. The award received was in the category of Engineering Consultant and was one of only 6 handed out in 2010 and the only one in that category.

You can read more about the awards at Exponential Programs Entrepreneur of the Year Awards page.

The main reason for this post is to touch on the most significant aspect of this award for me. I once said that as a Business Owner I made a pretty good Engineer.  The past 18 months has a seen a transition away from that to the point now where I can say that I am an Entrepreneur who is also an EngineerEngineering is a Profession and so it isn’t something that suddenly stops being relevant.  Our education and mindset is all based on practical problem solving through the use of technology while balancing performance, risk and cost.  And we apply this skillset and mindset to most aspects of our lives, even when it isn’t the only way to go about it.  So I am very pleased to be making this transition.  Not only is our business better for it but our clients are as well.

And I also thank our clients for the trust they have placed in us to deliver Electronics Design and Embedded Software Development for their next generation of market leading products, the vast majority of which are still made in Australia at a profit.
